Faculty Emeritus Policy : 5:02:01:10

Responsible Executive: Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs

I. PURPOSE

  1. Faculty having served in an institution governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) system of sufficient length of time to be eligible for state retirement benefits and meet Motlow State Community College (Motlow State) requirements shall be eligible for emeritus faculty status upon retirement.
  2. Motlow State requirements for faculty emeritus status include:
    1.  Served as full-time faculty at Motlow State for ten (10) or more years.
    2. Demonstrated distinguished instructional service as a faculty member.

II. PROCESS

  1. Nominations for emeritus status for retiring faculty shall be made in writing and originate within the academic area.
  2. Self-nominations will not be accepted.
  3. The nomination will provide documentation of years of service and describe distinguished service to the institution.
  4. The nomination will be forwarded to the President.
  5. The President will invite endorsements for the nomination from the Faculty Council and the Academic leadership group.
  6. Designation as emeritus faculty shall be at presidential discretion.
  7. Letters of recommendations should be received by April 1 of each year.
  8. Decisions on Faculty Emeritus shall be made by May 1 of each year.

III. RANK

Faculty Emeritus shall be granted with the rank at which the faculty member retired.  As an example, a faculty member retiring as an associate professor and awarded emeritus status shall be given the rank of Associate Professor Emeritus.

IV. PRIVILEGES

  1. Emeritus faculty of Motlow State shall be entitled to such privileges and benefits as the college designates insofar as such privileges and benefits are within the limits of the institution’s discretionary authority.  The privileges and benefits will include:
    1. Assignment of an identification card recognizing the holder as emeritus faculty of Motlow State;
    2. Access to institutional facilities and services commonly available to Motlow State faculty;
      1. Libraries;
      2. Physical education and recreation facilities; and
      3. Bookstore.
    3. Admission upon presentation of faculty emeritus identification card, to college functions commonly available to faculty, such as on-campus athletic events, cultural events, and Motlow State sponsored programs; and
    4. Opportunity to participate in graduation activities and other ceremonies of the college.
  2. Persons granted emeritus status shall be listed in the directory portion of the college catalog under heading of Faculty Emeriti.
