Faculty Class Assignment And Teaching Load Including Summer School : 5:10:00:00

Responsible Executive: Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs

I. PURPOSE

This policy outlines the procedures related to assignments and teaching loads for faculty of Motlow State Community College (Motlow State). This policy also includes assignments for faculty related to summer school.

II. CLASS ASSIGNMENT & TEACHING LOAD

  1. The schedule and teaching assignments for each semester are developed by the Academic Deans, in cooperation with faculty members of that department. When scheduling fall and spring courses, the Academic Deans, in consultation with appropriate department leads/directors, shall determine faculty assignments after considering the Work Made for Hire Assignments (WMFH) load, seniority and rank, teaching experience, evaluations, administrative responsibilities, and training. Each semester the Chief Academic Officer receives from the Academic Deans an assignment of teaching duties to each faculty member. Unless an exception applies, all faculty will teach a full load each academic term. A full teaching load for a fall or spring academic term is defined as 15 equated credit hours per semester. A full teaching load for a summer academic term is defined as a maximum of eight (8) equated credit hours for the summer term. The maximum summer and intersession pay may not exceed 25 percent of the preceding year’s salary; however, exceptions may be granted, as needs are determined, by the Chief Academic Officer (or designee). Such need shall be documented, based on the curricular needs of students, prior to the grant of any exceptions.
  2. The equated credit hours teaching load is determined by taking one-half the sum of the actual credit hour assignment and the actual contact hours for that assignment
    1. Equated load = ½ (credit hours + contact hours)
  3. Overloads may be granted in extenuating circumstances. Eligibility for an overload teaching schedule that exceeds a full teaching load of 15 equated credit hours in a given academic term will be determined by the Academic Dean of the appropriate academic unit, in collaboration with the Chief Academic Officer (or designee). The criteria that the Academic Dean shall consider in reaching a determination about the need for a faculty overload, as well as the ability of an individual faculty member to take an overload assignment, will include, but not be limited to, the following:
    1. WMFHs (course maintainers)
    2. Load
    3. Seniority and rank
    4. 4. Teaching experience
    5. Evaluations
    6. Administrative responsibilities
    7. Training
  4. Faculty overload assignments shall be limited to no more than two (2) additional courses, or eight (8) credit hours, per academic term.
  5. For procedures related to external (outside Motlow State) teaching assignments, please refer to TBR Policy 5.01.05.00 Outside Employment and Compensation.
  6. Extra compensation for equated hours in excess of a 15 equated credit hour load per semester will be paid in four (4) equal payments throughout the semester (February – May for Spring or September – December for Fall).
  7. The rates for determining extra compensation amounts are as follows:
    1. Instructor rank: $550 per semester hour
    2. Assistant Professor rank: $600 per semester hour
    3. Associate Professor rank: $650 per semester hour
    4. Professor rank: $700 per semester hour

III. SUMMER SCHOOL ASSIGNMENTS

  1. Faculty members are employed on an academic year basis without obligation for or guarantee of summer school employment.
  2. Faculty who wish to teach during the summer sessions at Motlow State will be given an opportunity to request such employment during the early part of the preceding spring semester.
  3. Questions concerning summer assignments should be directed to the appropriate Academic Dean.
  4. A faculty member may teach, and be compensated for, a maximum of eight (8) equated credit hours for the summer term. The maximum summer and intersession pay may not exceed 25 percent of the preceding year salary; however, exceptions may be granted, as needs are determined, by the Chief Academic Officer. Such need shall be documented, based on the curricular needs of students, prior to the grant of any exceptions. Faculty on a 12-month contract will teach and be paid based on their contractual agreement with the institution.
  5. Method of Selection for Summer Assignments
    1. Once the summer schedule is formulated, the appropriate Academic Dean will provide each faculty member the opportunity to request employment for the summer.
    2. When scheduling summer courses, the Academic Deans, in consultation with appropriate Department Leads/directors, shall determine faculty assignments after considering the WMFHs, load, seniority and rank, online teaching experience, evaluations, administrative responsibilities, and training.
    3. Scheduled classes may be staffed by a qualified staff/faculty member from another department/area or by a qualified adjunct faculty member if no faculty member within the department is available.
  6. Compensation
    1. Regular academic year faculty personnel who serve the institution as teaching faculty during intersessions and summer school shall be compensated at the rate of 1/32 of their academic year salary per semester hour of teaching load.
