Become a Sterile Processing Technician

The training program includes the basics of medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, microbiology, infection prevention and control, and the principles and methods of the sterilization process. It also covers cleaning, decontaminating, processing, packaging, distributing, storing, and inventory control of sterile goods, instruments, trays, and equipment. Students completing the program can sit for the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) certification or the Certified Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) certification.

Sterile Processing Technicians are responsible for:

  • The decontamination, preparation, and sterilization of medical instruments
  • Operate and monitor sterilization equipment
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Managing inventory of instruments and supplies within the department
  • Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic technique, infection control, and safety regulations
  • Communicate professionally with other healthcare professionals
  • Distribute the medical devices required for patient care
